Roberto Tostado

Born in Torreon Coahuila in 1980. A painter by trade, like those of yesteryear, diligent and disciplined, he works in his studio with large canvases, lots of oil and an apron. With strong strokes and an enormous talent for drawing, Roberto Tostado's work is direct, unscrupulous and with a very fine sense of humor.

His work concentrates, not on a specific theme, but on an impulse that seems to spring from his walk in the world; he paints what he sees, what he feels, what moves and moves him. Tostado is an example of how to be a true painter in these times of late postmodernism, without hiding his influences, his work reflects his closeness to German expressionism, he is steeped in modernism and the avant-garde, anointed by Velázquez and the Spanish baroque and all this, without ties to the conceptual, but perfectly articulated in his concept.

Faces and bodies stand out in his work, whether it is the body without a head, the head without a body or the whole body. The agility of his brushstrokes is as dynamic as the movement reflected in his figures and, above all, in the expression of the faces. The series "Cefalografías" shows a group of faces that, within the anonymity, are almost recognizable to everyone, it seems as if it were a catalog of indeterminate emotions, but so common that it is not possible not to identify them and identify with them.

In Guadalajara he started working at Iñaki Beorlegui's workshop in 2002 as a workshop assistant, where he began to take drawing lessons. He moved to Aguascalientes in 2003 where he joined the workshop of Master Moises Diaz Jimenez at the school of visual arts, where he had his first solo exhibition "Diálogos Blandos" in 2004. In 2005 he made engraving in Torreon Coahuila with the master Miguel Canseco. He returned to Guadalajara the following year to study human figures with Master José Fors. The following years he lived between Guadalajara and Aguascalientes. He is selected in 2005 in the national print competition in Guanajuato, in the First Biennial of the Americas in 2006, in 2007 in the October Hall of Guadalajara and Art club of the newspaper Mural and in the Biennial Enrique Guzman of Aguascalientes in 2008. In 2009 he had a solo exhibition "¡Apócrifo!" where he exhibits 20 large format portraits at the Aguascalientes City Gallery. In 2012 he began to study various painting techniques with Master Santiago Rebolledo and participated in a small group exhibition at the Machado Gallery in Mexico City. In 2014 he obtained honorable mention in the Joaquin Clausell Biennial in Campeche. In 2017 she took a drawing workshop with master German Venegas. He currently works between Aguascalientes and Mexico City where he has had 3 solo exhibitions and several group exhibitions, both in the city and the rest of the country, especially with an itinerant project of monotypes from the workshop of the master Ramon Durán with which he shares space with artists such as Daniel Lezama, Flor Minor, Alberto Castro Leñero, among others. On December 13, 2019 opens the solo exhibition CUL-DE-SAC at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Aguascalientes, On February 19, 2022 opens "New Transgressions" at Art Bug Gallery in the city of Los Angeles, California and on April 29, 2022 opens the exhibition "Revisions" in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
